Organometallic Chemistry, Homogeneous, and Heterogeneous Catalysis

Our research currently focuses on the synthesis of late transition metal complexes supported by nitrogen-based 1,2,3-triazole, imino, amino, or benzimidazole ligands and their catalytic applications in various chemical transformation. In addition, we are particularly interested in ligand stabilized metal nanoparticles for heterogeneous catalysis.

Research Highlights

(1) Tunable porosity of crosslinked-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane supports for palladium-catalyzed aerobic alcohol oxidation in water

Palladium nanoparticles stabilized by ester functional groups from POSS-based cross-linked MMA networks exhibit high activities for aerobic alcohol oxidation in a water/P123 solution.

(2) Benzimidazole-triazole ligands with pendent triazole functionality: Unexpected formation and effects on copper-catalyzed aerobic alcohol oxidation

Amino-triazole compounds unexpectedly undergo oxidative ring cyclization in the presence of copper ions to generate the corresponding benzimidazole-triazole products with a pendent triazole arm. While triazole substituents affect the solid state structures of the copper(II) complexes, ESR and CV data indicate the same molecular structures in CH3CN. We also observed that more steric hindrance of the triazole substituents resulted in reduced catalytic activities for copper-catalyzed aerobic alcohol oxidation in CH3CN at room temperature.

(3) Homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts of organopalladium functionalized-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes for Suzuki–Miyaura reaction

Mononuclear and multinuclear palladium(II) complexes of pyridine-triazole-functionalized POSS-based supports serve as highly active homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts for Suzuki–Miyaura cross coupling, respectively. The heterogeneous catalysts can be reused for at least five reaction cycles via simple centrifugation without a loss of activities.

(4) Pyridine–triazole ligands for copper-catalyzed aerobic alcohol oxidation

A series of copper(II) complexes containing pyridine-triazole ligands were prepared. Based on CV data and DFT calculations, the regular type triazole coordination afforded more electron rich copper center as compared to the inverse type coordination. Consequently, the regular type Cu-triazole complex is a more active catalyst for aerobic oxidation of alcohol.

(5) Palladium(II) complexes featuring bidentate pyridine–triazole ligands: Synthesis, structures, and catalytic activities for Suzuki–Miyaura coupling reactions

Our study have shown that with two possible types of triazole N donors (proximal vs. medial triazole nitrogen) palladium(II) ion selectively binds to the proximal triazole nitrogen to give a regular type triazole complex. Experimental studies further revealed more readily ligand dissociation for palladium-medial triazole N coordination. In general, the palladium complexes featuring pyridine–triazole ligands are active for Suzuki–Miyaura cross coupling reactions in DMF:H2O.

(6) Cu complexes supported by tripodal "click" ligands for atom transfer radical polymerization

Copper catalyst systems consisting of copper bromide and tripodal triazole-based ligands with different triazole substituents were investigated as catalysts for radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA).
